Every person you see is in their own life, living it, just as you are living yours. Do you really see them?
If you take a moment to watch them, you can imagine their focus. It might be on the things in front of them, or on the sounds they’re hearing, or it could be on the thoughts they’re having in their head.
Sometimes their focus is on you. Every one of these people sees you the same way that you see them–an animated body, doing whatever you happen to be doing, totally outside of them. But do they really see you?
It seems like such an elementary concept, yet there have been countless books written on it, dissecting this subject. And what good has all of that writing done? The blind masses won’t read it–not even if you offer it on audio, or in braille.
There are billions of people on this planet. The comparative few who really see the others, need to reach the rest. It’s how we can change lives, and save lives, and actually leave this world a better place than when we entered it.
Words can be powerful persuaders, perfectly capable of going the distance. We simply need a voice that carries. We need something that says, “I really see you! Why? Because I am you. And you are me. For all of our uniqueness and differences, we are the same.”
Perhaps the key to that door will always be lost for those who choose not to look for it. It falls on the people inside, to open that door for them. Why? Because they are you–they just don’t understand that, yet. Let them know that you really see them.
How? Well, a t-shirt comes to mind.
